Nice. I played with Udio a bit, but then kinda realized I didn't have an objective. Of course, it was stunningly simple to create a song that wasn't complete trash, which is certainly interesting to see.
I majored in art in college, and I was in 2 bands that played live shows and recorded, so I think I have some idea about all this stuff.
I think the potential is definitely there. I still feel like, while it’s not trash, the music isn’t good either. Seems very much like filler. A good option for content creators. I foresee a lot of stock music composers adjusting their business models. The big weakness is still sound quality. Very over compressed tonally which robs a lot of the feel. Plus AI doesn’t seem to get any more fringe genres.
Considering this tool is a week old and it's as bad as it'll ever be, it's pretty impressive. Agreed that the tonal quality isn't great, but neither is the tonal quality of low quality MP3s, which some people actually prefer the sound of. Autotune and glitch have become their own musical aesthetic, so it'll be interesting what AI does to shaping a new aesthetic.
Right now, stock sound and wallpaper music makers will need to adapt. Big hotel lobby music industry is in trouble.
Yes, I agree - "not trash" is not a super duper high bar. Just to be clear, I am very confident I could write MUCH better punk/crust songs than the output so far, and it's not even close... but I mean that takes Andrew time and Andrew energy, of which I seem to have less and less.
That said, I'm in no rush to create AI music (at least until I have a goal in mind).
Musically, AI has improved quite a bit though I still wouldn’t classify any of these as accurate to less popular genres. The voices are better but the tonal qualities are still pretty awful to my ear.

Excellent point to always keep in mind, that this is the worst it'll ever be from here on out. The future is shockingly different than the present.
