More on the inception of this artifact from our workshop below.
During one of my recent field trip in the janky time machine with some time-travel-bloggers in training, we stumbled upon a curious sight. Sandwiched (pun totally intended) between ads for the latest brain-boosting smoothie and hover-skate rentals was a sandwich board with a curious offer. "Bypass age-locks and more." & “Get your Fauxsona inside” it read.
For the uninitiated, Fauxsona is street slang for Deep Fake IDs. As the name suggests, it's all about creating a faux persona, and not just for sneaky students looking to puff up a storm in Vape Lounges or binge on "forbidden" content. There's a deeper, darker market at play here.
Sure, the tech-savvy students of this timeline use these IDs to bypass age restrictions, and frankly, who can blame them? With Deep Fake Imaging and that sneaky Crypto Inauthentication, these IDs are virtually undetectable. But it's not just the rebellious youth getting in on the action.
Word on the street is that there's a surge in demand from common folks. Why? To escape the ever-watchful eye of big tech and other personal tracking privacy violators. In a world where your every move, like or dislike, is tracked, analyzed, and monetized, a Fauxsona is like a cloak of invisibility. It's a ticket to a life untracked, unmonitored, and unjudged.
But it's not all rosy. There's a murkier side to this. Criminals are buying these IDs, and we're not talking about just sneaking into clubs. Crypto theft, biogenetic fraud, you name it.
In this timeline, your identity is more than just your face. It's a blend of your digital footprint, biometrics, and yes, your trusty ID card. With the rise of Fauxsona, the line between who you are and who you could be is becoming dangerously thin.
So, next time you're at a Vape Lounge, and someone flashes their Fauxsona, remember, it's not just about getting in. It's about fitting into a future where your identity is up for grabs. Stay safe, time travelers, and keep those eyes peeled for the next artifact!
Behind the Scenes
Yesterday, Julian Bleecker and I had the thrill of guiding a mix of time travelers through a digital rendition of the Design Fiction Work Kit. With the janky time machine as our vessel, we journeyed to a few near futures. Our mission? To dive deep, discover, and collect artifacts for later analysis. And what an exhilarating journey it was!
We began the workshop with a hands-on demo using the cards, leading to the concept described above.
For our example session, the drawn cards unveiled the following dynamics:
Archetype: Wallet.
Object: Peripheral thing.
Action: Deepfake.
Attribute: Blockchain.
A frenzy of sticky notes, some spirited brainstorming, and a quick sketch later, we landed on the concept of Deep Fake IDs. Channeling the vibes of the fake ID hawkers from Toronto's Yonge Street back in the 80s and 90s, we envisioned a future echoing that past, resulting in the fascinating artifact showcased in the header image above.
The Workshop Test
Using our example as a template, we grouped our keen participants and directed them to breakout rooms. Each team was equipped with a canvas featuring four concealed cards. Armed with sticky notes and encouraged to use reference images, some even employed art generators to visualize their concepts.
The Workshop's Takeaways
Our workshop unfolded on Zoom and Figjam. While both platforms held their own, Figjam could use some enhancements. From a facilitator's viewpoint, it lacks the nuanced controls to prevent overenthusiastic participants from going overboard. The options are stark: view or edit, no middle ground. A piece of advice for Figjam? Introduce a user type with restricted tool access or let the board owner designate editable assets.
Regarding the workshop's structure, we jotted down some insights during the test and are gearing up to roll out a feedback survey. The objective? Gauge the participants' take on different workshop elements and their learning outcomes.
Regarding the ideas churned out by our attendees? Absolutely stellar. One group acknowledged the challenge they faced, but as I emphasized, it's supposed to be tough, especially in the beginning. Imagination, after all, is like a muscle—it needs consistent workouts to grow strong. Despite their initial hesitations, the concepts they birthed were impressive. Given that this was a maiden voyage in the janky time machine for many and they had a mere 25-minute window, the results were astoundingly thoughtful and fleshed out. Some ideas shone with originality, and every single one was primed to be a top-notch design fiction artifact, ready to be crafted into its ultimate visual avatar.
This trial was a whirlwind prep for a major session with a leading tech firm. A big shout-out to our enthusiastic participants! We're looking forward to hosting more of these in the near future. So, keep an eye out for our next workshop announcement!
