AR headset with Gen Z slang translator app installed.

Welcome to Workit Wednesday where I use the Design Fiction Work Kit prompt cards to inspire and execute a piece of design fiction.

The cards that I have drawn for today’s speedrun are:

  • Archetype = Notification

  • Object = Payment

  • Action = Translate

  • Attribute = 60+ Crowd

  • Tone = As if Apple made it

The following is a stream of consciousness breakdown and documentation of my process, a rambling peek under the hood of the janky time machine.

Let’s talk about what’s going on in my head as I ponder this selection.

The first thing that stands out is the Tone card. Anything made by Apple will be minimal, refined, sleek and most likely white or aluminum. The 60+ Crowd helps narrow down the type of notification that should be presented. Payment in this context makes me think of scams on the elderly. The Translate card is landing very literally for me right now, as in translating a language, or maybe a foreign currency. And lastly, the notification archetype seems to fit very nicely with the Apple tone as we’re all pretty familiar with i-stuff’s incessant nagging.

With my initial braindump consideration of the cards out of the way, I feeling into a more plausible future. With the rumors of Apple releasing an AR headset or glasses, I’m inclined to express a notification in that area.

I’m going to take 5 to prep another coffee and have a think of what I just processed.

Okay, I had a small eureka moment during my re-caffeination. I imagined an AR headset that helped an older generation understand a world where modern language is non-sensical to them. What if today’s Gen Z slang persisted into the future and everything ended up written that way? Kinda like the movie Idiocracy (a comedy sci-fi that has almost become a documentary).

Hella cheugy right? No cap.
