Strap in, fellow time travelers! Today marks the first blogaversary of Design Fiction Daily, and what a journey itβs been. Every day (except for some days), I've taken my seat in what I affectionately call the 'janky time machine,' ready to dive into the unknown and unearth relics from the future.
The Adventures of the Janky Time Machine: The ride hasn't always been smooth β but it's been thrilling. The time machine, while mostly functional, is a far cry from a sleek, sci-fi vessel. Itβs quirky and unpredictable, with dials that spin to random destinations and a floor littered with crumbs of past travels. The wires sometimes spark in protest, and there's this one button labelled 'Do Not Press, Ever.' Why? That came with the rig.
The Joy of Discovery: Like an archaeologist unearthing forgotten histories, I find myself dusting off artifacts from the future, each one a puzzle piece of a timeline yet to unfold. These artifacts aren't just objects; they're questions incarnate. Why do they exist? Under what bizarre or mundane circumstances were they created?
Reflecting on a Year of Queries and Quirks: Each artifact challenges me to ponder β what societal symptoms led to its creation? What story does it silently narrate about its world? This is the essence of Design Fiction Daily. We donβt seek immediate answers; we revel in the mysteries and the what-ifs.
As I celebrate this milestone, I look back at a year filled with curiosity, surprises, and the joy of the unexpected. Thank you for joining me in exploring these strange yet familiar futures. Here's to another year of questioning, exploring, and, of course, enduring the quirks of the janky time machine.

AC/DC and the Infinite Well of Design Fiction: A Year in Review
AC/DC - Active Commitment to Daily Creation (a term coined by my pal
). It's a philosophy that's transformed my approach to design fiction, pushing me from a curious explorer to a vanguard in this ever-evolving field. The Power of Habit: AC/DC isn't just a catchy acronym, or a classic rock band; it's a testament to the power of habit. Forcing myself to create daily, I discovered that what starts as a challenge evolves into a routine, and soon, an indispensable part of your day. Missing a day feels off, like forgetting your keys. But here's the twist - it's in this routine that magic and frustration coexist.
The Day Design Fiction Seemed Exhausted: There was a day, about four months in, when I thought I'd hit the end of the road. It seemed like I'd unearthed every possible artifact from the future. The well of inspiration felt dry. But in pushing through that mental barrier, something remarkable happened. What began as a deflated session turned into one of my favorite and most enlightening entries.
The Endless Well of Inspiration: This experience was a revelation. The well of inspiration for future design fiction artifacts is indeed endless. It's about seeing the world through a nuanced lens, where every detail can spark a new idea. My thinking around Design Fiction began to evolve. Some concepts became malleable, shaping into new forms with each exploration, while others solidified into strong, unwavering opinions about the technique.
From Early Adopter to Vanguard: This journey through daily creation has taken me from being an early adopter of Design Fiction to an expert and now, to the forefront of the movement. It's a testament to how a simple commitment to creation can expand your horizons, challenge your perceptions, and lead you to uncharted territories of thought and innovation.
So, as we embark on another year of Design Fiction Daily, remember the power of AC/DC. It's not just about creating daily; it's about imagining harder about endless possibilities and allowing yourself to be surprised by where they take you. Here's to another year of exploring, creating, and leading the charge in the prescient and quirky world of Design Fiction!
Congrats! look forward to following year 2
DrΓ©, still working on my ACβ‘DC post (maybe I could borrow 'Janky' to make sure I finish it before the end of the year??), but thanks for the shout-out! I can't believe it's been a year. Your efforts and insight are an inspiration.
