In my primeline, TikTok's impact on fashion was undeniably immense. Trends would emerge, peak, and fade within a matter of weeks, leaving fast fashion scrambling to keep up. So, when I hopped into the janky time machine to go do some shopping in a not-so-distant timeline and update my wardrobe, I encountered a surprising revelation.
Gone were the days of brick-and-mortar clothing stores and online fashion websites. TikTok had become so influential in the rise and fall of fashion trends (much like it had with music) that they launched their own clothing line, offered as a weekly subscription box. Using their algorithm, they'd manipulate the upcoming week's trend, send subscribers a box of stylish outfits to ensure their fit was on fleek, and then have them return the items after the trend had run its course in just seven days. Then it was on to the next box.
I have to admit, everyone here looks so stylish. I usually prefer a low-key look, sticking to jeans and a t-shirt, but now I'm the one who stands out.
Today’s Design Fiction Daily was inspired by General Seminar S04-E01: The Futures of Fashion, where I, and a handful of other participants jumped into the janky time machine to dig up artefacts from that timeline.
