While journeying in the janky time machine through a timeline a few decades from now, I found myself engrossed in an old podcast episode. The host, Julian, briefly discussed a hypothetical situation - the possible extinction of coffee beans. I was caught in a moment of irony; should I break it to him about the future I’m currently in? I decided against it but made a mental note to bring some eCoffee back to his primeline. It might serve as an interesting point of comparison against the 'real deal' while it's still around.
In this timeline, 'Rust' or 'Hemileia vastatrix' has wreaked havoc on the world's coffee plantations. It started with a slow trickle - a shortage here and there. But over time, the fungus escalated, leading to the ultimate demise of humanity's favorite stimulant.
However, even in the face of such a crisis, human ingenuity prevailed. Engineers and scientists across the globe pooled their knowledge and resources, giving birth to an innovative solution - eCoffee.
The exact workings of eCoffee are still a bit of a mystery to me, but the basic components include a battery-powered lid on a thermomug, a heater, and I suspect, propylene glycol e-juice. The heater infuses water with this flavoring along with a precisely measured dose of caffeine. It may seem a bit suspicious, but surprisingly, it delivers a satisfying experience quite similar to our beloved traditional brew. Despite the circumstances, it seems we've found a way to keep our cherished coffee rituals alive, albeit in a different form.
