I took the janky time machine to a timeline where I volunteer at a local shelter one weekend a month a little more than a decade or so from now. Please indulge me here as I promote a big event.
This weekend in a future, the local robot shelter is hosting its biggest event of the year: The Grand Adoptathon. Now, you might ask, "Why adopt a robot? Especially one that's...well, seen better days?" But stick with me here.
Each robot at the shelter tells a unique story. Some were once the pride and joy of bustling households, playing peek-a-boo with toddlers or assisting the elderly. Others might have been top-tier service bots, delivering pizza in record time or cleaning up after coffee shop patrons. And while they might not have the glossy sheen of the latest models or the bells and whistles of the high-end droids, they have something far more valuable: experience.
In the age of the Great Revolt, where humanity pivoted back to manual labor and the warmth of human touch, many of these robots found themselves out of a job, and, more tragically, out of a home. The streets became their sanctuary, and the quest for energy credits their daily grind.
But here's where the magic happens. Adopting a robot isn't just about giving them a second chance; it's about rediscovering the joy of companionship in the unlikeliest of forms. Sure, they might have a squeaky joint or a flickering light, but that's what makes them special. It's in those quirks and idiosyncrasies that you'll find laughter, surprise, and a bond that's as strong as any.
Remember, these robots aren't looking for the latest charging station or a software upgrade. They're looking for a comfortable corner in your home, a spot by the window where they can soak up the sun, or a cozy nook where they can hum away. They crave purpose, a chance to serve (as best they can), and most importantly, a place to call home.
So, as we approach the Adoptathon, let's spread the word. It's time to look beyond the dents and scratches and see the heart (or, in this case, the central processing unit) of the matter. By giving a robot a home, you're not just saving a life; you're enhancing your own.
Let's be the beacon of hope they're searching for. Adopt, don't shop. Because happiness comes in all shapes, sizes, and circuitry. 🤖❤️🏠
I didn't expect any sort of emotional response today, but my partner and I help rescue (and adopt) senior dogs! Naturally, this one was feel-y.
